Survival:
Ng Eng Hooi's professional journey commenced in 2005 when he graduated with a marketing bachelor's degree, embarking on a challenging odyssey. Despite attending 20 job interviews, securing employment remained elusive, forcing him into a precarious living situation in Kuala Lumpur. Unable to afford rent, he resorted to squatting illegally in a friend's hostel room. Amid these trials, a brief job paying RM1,200 monthly ended abruptly after two months due to unforeseen challenges, including a motor accident and the theft of his bike. Eventually, he found solace in a door-to-door sales job in the optical industry.
At the Crossroad:
Facing a crossroads in his career, Ng Eng Hooi's trajectory took an unexpected turn when he was invited by a friend to become one of the directors of GAC Adventure Consultant, a team-building company. However, the partnership dissolved in the third year due to disagreements among partners. This pivotal moment prompted Ng Eng Hooi to engage in soul-searching, leading him to heed his inner calling for "people development." Determined to align his career with his passion, he took a loan to pursue a master's degree in Managerial psychology while concurrently enrolling in professional coaching courses.
A Breakthrough:
The clouds began to part for Ng Eng Hooi as he found success as an internal trainer at Perfect Pentagon and Royal Selangor. This period marked a breakthrough in his career, where he honed his skills, became a top trainer, earned a master's degree, obtained professional coaching certification, and found personal fulfillment by tying the knot with his better half.
Emboldened by his newfound expertise, Ng Eng Hooi decided to venture into entrepreneurship, establishing Jay Team Building. The first year saw remarkable success, achieving an annual revenue of RM1 million and garnering positive testimonials from 20 satisfied clients. Guided by strategic leadership, Jay Team Building went on to win the prestigious title of "Best Team Building Provider" in 2018 and 2020.
Transformation:
Despite the triumphs, challenges arose when GST was introduced, causing a stumble for Jay Team Building. In response, Ng Eng Hooi made a difficult decision to take a contract role at Samsung Electronics as a trainer for the retail sales team. The transition to a corporate environment was arduous, taking a year for Ng Eng Hooi to adjust to his role in HR/L&D. However, the experience brought new value and joy, sustaining his dedication.
8 transformative years at Samsung Electronics & Lotuss Stores Malaysia have shaped Ng Eng Hooi into a complete corporate leader with a robust sense of business acumen, communication skills, and knowledge. His outstanding performance resulted in two promotions within two years, culminating in being named Employee Of The Year in 2017. Recognizing his leadership potential, he was offered a pivotal role in Samsung Korea as a coaching leader, responsible for leading, planning, and facilitating global coaching strategy and workshops for all task-force members.
With an abundance of growth in his career path and a wealth of experiences, Ng Eng Hooi authored a published corporate culture book in 2021 titled "Building A Sustainable Coaching Culture: A Step By Step Guide To Coaching Culture Implementation." Endorsed by numerous successful corporate leaders, this sought-after book has solidified Ng Eng Hooi's reputation as a thought leader in corporate culture and coaching.
